Click-to-WhatsApp ads: judge them by sales, not cost per conversation

Judge a click-to-WhatsApp campaign by the revenue each conversation brings in, then compare it with what the conversation cost. A cheap chat that never closes loses money. In one of my coaching accounts in the Gulf, conversations cost EGP 115 each and returned about EGP 534 each, a 4.6x ROAS.

What is a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

A click-to-WhatsApp ad runs on Facebook or Instagram, and its button opens a WhatsApp chat with the business instead of a website. The sale happens inside that chat. In my accounts, Ads Manager counts the conversations and the revenue is matched off platform, against the sales team's records.

Why cost per conversation is the wrong target

Cost per conversation tells you how cheaply you start chats. It tells you nothing about how many of them close. Profit comes from two numbers together: revenue per conversation and cost per conversation. Divide the first by the second and you get the campaign's ROAS.

So the same cost per conversation can be great for one business and a loss for another. A high ticket coaching offer can afford an EGP 115 chat when enough chats close. A low margin flight booking cannot, and there the cost per chat has to go as low as it will go.

How I run click-to-WhatsApp campaigns

  1. I judge every creative by the sales it closes in the chat. A creative with a higher cost per conversation stays on when its chats close more often.
  2. I move budget by country. In the Gulf coaching account, spend went to the markets where chats turned into sales.
  3. When margins are thin, I push cost per conversation down. For the travel agency I kept testing more than a dozen ad sets and reached $0.06 per conversation on the strongest ones while volume kept growing.
  4. I work on the chat itself. On both accounts I trained the sales team, wrote the message script and prepared answers to the objections buyers raise, because the ad only starts the sale.
  5. I match revenue against the sales team's records, and that figure decides the real ROAS.

What to track

Questions about click-to-WhatsApp ads

Is a low cost per conversation always good?

Only when the chats close. A low cost per conversation with few sales loses money, while a higher cost with strong closing can be very profitable, as the EGP 115 conversations in my coaching account show.

How do you track revenue from WhatsApp sales?

I match the sales in the team's records to the campaign period and, where I can, to the creative and the country, then divide by spend. In my coaching account that gave a 4.6x ROAS: EGP 576,000 in sales from EGP 124,349 in spend.

Do click-to-WhatsApp ads work in the Gulf?

They worked for my online coaching client: 1,079 conversations over June and July 2026 returned a 4.6x blended ROAS. Results depend on the offer and on how well the sales team closes in the chat.

Have ad spend that should be doing more?

I take a limited number of accounts each quarter, so I can stay close to every one.
